Redesigned Covers, Same Literary Classics

The New York Times reports that publishers are turning toward modern, whimsical covers for literary classics in order to attract a generation used to Twilight and The Hunger Games.

Some of the redesigned jackets are clearly inspired by the “Twilight” series. HarperCollins released a cover for “Wuthering Heights” with a stark black background, a close-up of a red rose and an inscription that reads, “Bella & Edward’s favorite book.” (Critics sneered that it was a “Twilight” rip-off.)

Apparently, however, their efforts are working. Copies of Wuthering Heights and similar novels, such as Pride & Prejudice and Jane Eyre, have sold at record rates since the redesigned covers were introduced. As long as kids are enticed into reading these literary staples, right?
